Boo!

Last year we had a lot of kids come to the door for trick or treating. I was concerned that we night run out of candy before the night was through, but we managed to squeak by with just a few pieces left over at 9:00 pm, and we turned off the porch light at 9. I don’t think that kids should be roaming the neighborhoods after 9:00 pm, and it appears that most of my neighbors believe the same thing.

This year we bought an extra bag of assorted candies from Sam’s Club. If we have any left over by the end of the evening, at least this is candy that we like and can enjoy eating ourselves over the next couple of months.

Here it is 5:00 pm and we already have kids coming to the door! They are very young kids with their parents, and I’m sure they will tucker out quickly. It is fun to see the imaginative costumes that are being worn this year.

Pick Your Tater Salad

My mom made a great potato salad. She used fresh white potatoes, real Kraft mayonnaise, and a handful of other chopped vegetables and seasonings.

My step mother made a totally different potato salad. She used Miracle Whip – which I HATE -and yellow mustard and chopped hardboiled eggs.

My mother in law made hers even more different. She used Hellman’s mayo and put chopped sweet pickles in her potato salad.

Who knew that potato salad was such a specialty?

Toys and Movies

Are there any new movies coming out that DON’T have a complete line of toys associated with them? I mean, the Transformers, the G. I Joe, and even the G-Force gerbils have toys filling shelves at the WalMarts, KMarts and Targets of the world. And let’s not forget the “happy meals” at all the fast food joints that come with the movie promoting toys and PR tie-ins.

Summer Drinks

Around here we drink ice tea, especially over the hot summer months. I like to drink my tea unsweet but most every place around here will bring you sweet tea with a wedge of lemon on the rim of the glass unless you ask for unsweet tea. I like to add fruits to mine once in a while. The current favorite fruit additive is peach or mango. That makes it a fresher taste with body in the tea. But just about any fruit can be added to tea – it’s universal.

Romantic Gesture

My girl was down in the dumps – don’t know what was wrong, but she needed some cheering up. I stopped by the grocery store at lunch and picked up a few things to fix for dinner. this stuff needs almost no chef-attitude or skill – just open bags and boxes, heat up and put on the table.

I got a bag of salad greens and a little box of grape tomatoes. Then I got a package of potatoes in a tub, already mashed and seasoned with butter. I got a plank steak and a bottle of A-1 Mesquite marinade. And a bottle of merlot.

On the way to the checkout counter I picked up two eclairs from the bakery and a pair of votive candles.

No she doesn’t have to do anything to cook – I can handle the grill and the microwave on my own. I might let her set the table and light the candles, and she can choose the tunes on the stereo – maybe some jazz by chris Isaac.

Love my girl and want to cheer her up – hope this does it tonight.
