Shopping for Bargains

While at shopping today I was paying a lot of attention to the prices and stocking up on things that were either on sale or at a good discount for buying in bulk. We’ve gotten a little spoiled these past couple of years by making good money and spending rather freely. Now, the economy is going in the tank – pun intended with the cost of gasoline at $4.01 a gallon now – and we need to cut back on the spending.

One way to make the dollar go farther is to use coupons and plan your shopping around those kinds of bargains. The wife has an online coupon site that she always checks before buying big ticket items and now we check it before going out shopping for all our purchases.

For example, we used to go to one of the local discount eyeglasses stores with the $39 vision exams and the two for one price on eyeglasses. But the wife wanted to go back to contact lenses, so we decided to price shop on that before getting pressured into buying them from the optometrist. We found good prices on the internet and with the discounts on the coupon site we can save a lot of money. With the new prescription we can order Acuvue and Freshlook lenses at cheap prices online and have a 6 month supply delivered to our house.

We had to buy a wedding present for one of my employee’s getting married next month, so we found coupons for linens and housewares and spent about an hour browsing the store for a gift. To wrap up all our gift giving duties for the summer we also took advantage of discount online shopping for handbags, wallets, backpacks and luggage.

With summer here and mosquitos becoming a problem each evening, we decided to stock up on heartworm medicine for the dogs and found some great deals online for pet meds instead of buying them for full price from the veterinarian. Still have to get the rabies shot from the vet, but we don’t have to pay full price for the Heartguard anymore.

While at the mall I saw some cool NHL gear at the Reebok store. But instead of paying full retail price at the mall, I went online at the coupon site and found some great discount deals on Reebok for both online orders and a coupon if you want to go back to their retail store. But since I can order online and have it delivered with free shipping, it doesn’t make sense to spend the gas money to go to the mall and fight through all the crowds anymore. I would rather just order from home and have it delivered, then spend the extra time and money on other things.

Vacation Funds

I’m a firm believer in taking family vacations at least 2 or 3 times each year. Vacations are what keep people refreshed and motivated to deal with all the mundane aspects of life and a needed break from the stresses and strains of modern problems. Family vacations build memories and forge stronger relationships and introduce each member to new shared experiences.

With the country in a recession and the price of everything going up each day, many people may be inclined to postpone or cancel their vacation plans this year. I say, make the vacation a priority and find other ways to cut your budget if you have to.

Free Antibiotics at Publix

Sometimes you just can’t fight off an infection on your own and you need to drag yourself down to the doctor and get a prescription. This is a last resort for those of us with no medical insurance. Going to the doctor is not something you can afford to do unless it is a serious condition and you must have a prescription to get healthy.

Thank goodness for Publix grocery stores providing free antibiotics at their pharmacies. Of course, while you are waiting the 15-20 minutes for them to fill your prescription they are banking on you shopping for groceries in their store, so it’s a form of a loss leader for them. And it mostly worked in my case – I spent the 20 minutes of wait time walking the aisles, picking up sale items and Publix branded generics that were a good price.

So my free prescription actually cost me about $70. But I get to eat the benefits and I’ll be healthy again in 10 days or less. So, thank you, Publix.

Graduation

Today was Vanderbilt’s Commencement Day. Traffic downtown was snarled way beyond typical rush hour. Vanderbilt’s campus is a huge part of uptown Nashville. It includes the colleges, dormitories, frat houses, the athletic fields and stadium, and both the regular hospital and the new children’s hospital.

Vanderbilt’s hospital is known for being a teaching hospital, with clinics for a variety of rare diseases. Their trauma unit is top notch – they have two helicopters for Lifeflight rescues and an unmatched emergency room.

Vandy deserves their excellent Ivy League reputation. Congratulations to this year’s graduating students!

Wendy’s Bought By Arby’s

Read n the news today that the Triarc Companies, owner of the Arby’s chain of restaurants, has bought Wendy’s International restaurants. The deal is worth an estimated $2.34 Billion. Wendy’s is the third largest hamburger chain in the U.S., behind #1 McDonald’s and #2 Hardees.

The family of the late Dave Thomas, Wendy’s founder, said they were hoping that David Karam, a Wendy’s franchisee, would buy the comapny and effectively “keep it in the family,” but he was outbid by Triarc after months of negotiations.

Wendy’s 2008 first quarter profits totaled $4.1 Million, compared with a 2007 first quarter profit of $14.7 million.
