Romantic Gesture

My girl was down in the dumps – don’t know what was wrong, but she needed some cheering up. I stopped by the grocery store at lunch and picked up a few things to fix for dinner. this stuff needs almost no chef-attitude or skill – just open bags and boxes, heat up and put on the table.

I got a bag of salad greens and a little box of grape tomatoes. Then I got a package of potatoes in a tub, already mashed and seasoned with butter. I got a plank steak and a bottle of A-1 Mesquite marinade. And a bottle of merlot.

On the way to the checkout counter I picked up two eclairs from the bakery and a pair of votive candles.

No she doesn’t have to do anything to cook – I can handle the grill and the microwave on my own. I might let her set the table and light the candles, and she can choose the tunes on the stereo – maybe some jazz by chris Isaac.

Love my girl and want to cheer her up – hope this does it tonight.

Happy Holidays

This time of year is for holidays and family things, no matter what your religion or lack of. It’s the season to be merry. It’s the time to be generous and grateful. This is when you realize that family means everything and friends are to be treasured.

So Merry Christmas to my friends and family. If you celebrate other holidays during this time of year, I hope that your choice of celebration is wonderful for you, too.

Feeling Good

There must be hundreds of thousands of people who get up every morning and smile right away. They are embracing the new day and are looking forward to whatever treats the new day has in store for them.

Then there are the others who wake up dreading what troubles the day will bring. Some of them have good reason – they are facing a day in court or perhaps a job performance review, a dispatch to the front lines of a war, or a difficult medical procedure. But many people are just depressed from their normal quality of life and daily troubles.

I wish I had the solution to the people who drag themselves through the day feeling depressed and sad. That must be awful. I try to start my day with a smile and a good cup of coffee. It doesn’t always work out that way, but I do make the effort.

Going for a Spin

Normally I don’t read Spin Magazine. I’m not into the grunge rock and punk music, and that’s what they seem to focus on. I think it’s great that some of these kids have a shot at a singing or performing career, but since I don’t have college age kids I just can’t get my head into what they are singing about or how they look. The extreme hair and makeup, the tattoos, the piercings – it’s so boring. Really boring. What I’d like to see is kids that are clean and groomed and take music seriously along the lines of lyrics meaningful to more than just 13 and 14 year old spoiled brats.

But I do like reading the ads in this magazine. You can learn a lot about a variety of things in today’s pop culture by reading the ads. Especially if you have an interest in liquor and electronics. You’ll read about things you aren’t exposed to in any other popular medium. That’s the downside of targeting ads to narrow demographics. The slick marketing pros in NYC and LA don’t always get it right.
