Brazil

I have some great stories about Brazil from people I know who used to live there or have gone there on vacation. I was even invited to tour the Brazalian embassy in Washington DC, as the legal administrator to Brazil’s Ambassador was married to a co-worker and we all became good friends while we lived in the DC area.

She would show us pictures of her very very very large family in Brazil and their house on a huge plantation. They were considered well off as they owned several hundred acres of prime farmland, yet they did not have indoor plumbing in the house and they did not have a telephone on the property – and this was a recent as 1990. If you wanted to make a phone call you had to travel to the nearest town – about 200 miles away – and stand in line to use the onepay  phone mounted on a pole in the center of town.

With the advent of cell phones and satellites, they do have both phones and TV in the house now, but they still have many primitive limitations and I find it amazing that with today’s technology so many people still live with the challenge of basics like getting clean water and protecting your children from attacks by wild animals like crocodiles and panthers.

Garden’s Bounty

What a thrill to pick fresh vegetables from my container garden this year. I haven’t had a garden for 4 years, so I was determined to do a little of it this year somehow – and containers proved the answer.

There are so many trees around my house that there is no place to put a traditional garden and have it get enough sunlight. So I bought some large pots and put in two tomato plants, 7 green pepper plants and 1 jalenpeno plant. Then I strategically placed each pot in a place that would get sun and rain.

They are doing marvelously and we are picking from them daily now. Time to stock up on bacon so we can have our BLTs!

Fun Gift Ideas

There used to be a fun store at the mall called Spencers where you could buy fun gifts and silly novelty items. Those stores closed last year and I’ve not found anything to take its place until tonight when I came across an online site called Creative and Unique Gift Ideas.

This is the perfect place to find gag gifts and fun things, like a coffee cup that looks like a stack of three cups but is really only one cup. My favorite item is the Wi-Fi detecor shirt that lights up when you are close to a Wi-Fi source. What a great geek gift!

Cracker Barrel Rocks

About the only place around here to get a great breakfast is Cracker Barrel. There is always Waffle House – yuck – and Shoneys, with a couple of IHOPs here and there. But Cracker Barrels are all over and they are consistently great, homestyle food at a fair price.

This morning I ordered the special, called Grandma’s Blueberry Pancakes. The order came with two huge blueberry pancakes with a jar of Smuckers warmed blueberry syrup. It also came with two eggs cooked to order, two smoked sausage patties, hash browns, and a plate with homemade biscuits and gravy. All for $6.00 and with coffee and a tip you can’t get a better breakfast deal for under $10.

Red Wings Almost There

Last night’s Stanly Cup Playoffs game was awesome except that the red Wings won their third in the series and Pittsburg only has 1 win. They play again Monday night – in Detroit – and if the Penguins lose this one it is all over for them. I’m cheering for the underdog and hope the Penguins squeeze out a win at the Joe so that there is at least one more game.

The Red Wings were an easy team to beat for us early in the season. It’s a shame we couldn’t beat them a couple more times and have the Predators in the playoffs this year instead of the Red Wings. But there is some comfort in knowing that the team that beat us out of the Stanley Cup is the team that will most likely win the Stanley Cup.
