Romantic Gesture

My girl was down in the dumps – don’t know what was wrong, but she needed some cheering up. I stopped by the grocery store at lunch and picked up a few things to fix for dinner. this stuff needs almost no chef-attitude or skill – just open bags and boxes, heat up and put on the table.

I got a bag of salad greens and a little box of grape tomatoes. Then I got a package of potatoes in a tub, already mashed and seasoned with butter. I got a plank steak and a bottle of A-1 Mesquite marinade. And a bottle of merlot.

On the way to the checkout counter I picked up two eclairs from the bakery and a pair of votive candles.

No she doesn’t have to do anything to cook – I can handle the grill and the microwave on my own. I might let her set the table and light the candles, and she can choose the tunes on the stereo – maybe some jazz by chris Isaac.

Love my girl and want to cheer her up – hope this does it tonight.

Bees and Wasps

For some reason my yard is full of bumblebees this year. I noticed a couple of them about 2 weeks ago hovering around the rose bush by my mailbox. Then a couple days ago I noticed there were 5 or 6 bumblebee buzzing around the rose bush. Of course, the rose bush is in full bloom right now, so it is obviously very attractive to bees. But I do not remember seeing so many of them buzzing this bush last year.

There is a new wasp nest in the soffit of my roof, just around the corner from my front door. I have seen 3 or 4 red wasps flying about the yard this week, but I couldn’t find the nest. But this morning as I was going out to get the Sunday newspaper, I noticed a wasp flying over my head and as I tracked him with my eyes I noticed the next tucked away in the soffit. So next time I’m at the hardware store I’ll have to pick up a can of wasp killer and take out that nest. I can put up with the bumblebees as eco-friendly gesture but I can’t abide the red wasps.

Day of Beauty

Every 3 or 4 months I schedule my dog for her “Day of Beauty” at the groomers. She has what they call “a rough coat” which means she is not s short hair, but she’s not a long hair, either. She gets enough hair on her legs and belly to need a trim once in a while. The groomer also brushes her teeth and cuts her toenails after her bath, with extra conditioner.

I drop her off in the morning and find something to do for a few hours before they call and tell me she’s ready. She comes bounding out of the groomers back room with bows on her ears and a happy tail wagging.

The best I get is a haircut for $12. Although, when I go to the dentist for my 6 month checkup I do get someone to brush my teeth. So I guess the only service I’m lacking is having my toenails cut?

Happy Birthday!

My son is having a birthday today.

We bought a cake at the bakery that sounds delicious – yellow cake with strawberry filling and white icing. They wrote his name on it and we’ll sing happy birthday after dinner tonight.

For his birthday gift, he’s asked for a new computer desk for his bedroom. I think that’s a great idea. I’m going to take him to the store this afternoon and let him pick it out. Wish it could be a surprise – that’s more fun – but I want him to get what he wants, so it’s better to take him with me and let him choose.

Happy Holidays

This time of year is for holidays and family things, no matter what your religion or lack of. It’s the season to be merry. It’s the time to be generous and grateful. This is when you realize that family means everything and friends are to be treasured.

So Merry Christmas to my friends and family. If you celebrate other holidays during this time of year, I hope that your choice of celebration is wonderful for you, too.
