This is the start of a new year and also a new decade. The year Twenty Ten has great promise for us all, as our President gets settled into office and is able to use his influence to create the great changes that he has promised to bring us. There have been some economic stimulus plans, such as “cash for clunkers,” that were a huge success. Now we need to see some serious, lasting jobs created and help for Americans to keep or buy homes, and a new approach to our health care.

Red and Blue States

I live in a red state. Even though I voted blue and both of my kids voted blue, and several of our friends voted blue, our votes weren’t enough to make our state turn blue. That was pretty frustrating – I wish I fit in better with our neighbors. But they are evidently red.

On a good note, blue won overall. So there.

Attacking the Dropout Rate

Our new mayor is getting serious about his campaign promise to attack the dropout rate in the county. But he might be a little too late. Evidently, the state has taken over the county schools and has their own plan of attack in mind. They fired most of the school principals and moved people around all over the county, giving some promotions and others just re-assigned to where they can do less damage.

I would love to see the schools get serious about making the school campus a safe and pleasant place for our children to spend the better part of their days. If you’ve not been inside a public school lately and seen the awful conditions, listened to the demeaning and humiliating way that the teachers and school staff talk to the students, and actually looked inside their current textbooks to see what they are supposed to be learning – you can’t begin to understand the ginormous problems we are facing in trying to improve or revamp our public education system here.

Ross Perot is Charting Again

Remember Ross Perot? Rich guy from Texas, ran for president, made a lot of noise. A lot of what he says makes sense, and when a millionaire – or more likely billionaire – is willing to talk about money and share his insights, maybe the rest of us peasants should listen to him and take his advice. He is a powerful and persuasive speaker and is notorious for using lots of charts to illustrate his points.

Perot has launched a website called www.perotcharts.com that has . . . you guessed it! Charts.

He’s trying to help America manage it’s money and its debt. Check it out.

I Am Legend

Will Smith’s newest DVD, I Am Legend, just hit the stores last month and I picked it up at “Wally’s World of All Things Cheap” on my faith that it would be good since, after all, Will Smith is the star.

The DVD has bonus materials and the website has some goodies for the fans, too. wouldn’t be surprised to see a Playstation game coming out with the must kill all zombies theme.

My son loves the movie – he’s watched it 3 times already. Now he runs around the yard with his super pumper water gun killing pretend zombies.

Interesting concept – that everyone dies quickly from a genetically engineered virus. It was loosely based on fact – as the AIDS virus was manufactured by and released by our government. Only problem is that it takes a long time for someone to die of AIDS, otherwise they had quite a weapon, didn’t they?

Get Rid of Maury Davis!

Just because a guy is charming and persuasive, should we all go listen to and believe in whatever crap spews out of his mouth while prancing around a pulpit in front of TV cameras?

I think that someone who has committed murder and spent 8 and half years in jail is NOT someone that I want to listen to about God and morals.

I can’t get excited about any of these candidates for president.

I think McCain is too old and too hot headed. And his election guarantees more war(s).

I think Obama is too inexperienced and naive. I hate the way he makes great speeches but says the stupidest things when he has to ad lib. If you think Bush was nothing but a puppet, if Obama gets in office he’ll be another one.

I think Clinton is the best of the three, but she isn’t going to make it – she and her skirt chasing hubby have too many enemies.

Is it even worth voting this time?

Pay the Man

Gotta do the taxes today and get them in the mail. I cringe at the thought.

Pretty sure I don’t ow any money, but just sifting through all the paperwork and reading the confusing instructions drives me up the wall. I hate filling in forms. I wish there was an easier way. I’d be fine with them figuring out how much tax I owe and them take it out of each paycheck, then only if you think you should get money back should you have to file anything.

Otherwise, let them keep the damn money they already raked in and let them fill out their own damn forms and leave me the hell alone.

Whether I get money back or have to pay money in, it’s tradition in my house to not fill out the forms until after work on the 15th, then drive the envelope up to the post office as close to midnight as you can risk having to get in the long line of other last minute filers and still get the postmark before midnight. It’s tradition, and you don’t mess with tradition.
